Women Sports Spotlight!

Did you know that women started bowling back in the 1880s? Well let me tell you. The first official women’s bowling tournament was held at St. Louis, Missouri in 1917 with over 100 women participants, which was only the uprising for women’s bowling. In 1930 a woman named Jennie Kelleher was the first woman from Wisconsin to bowl a perfect 300 game in history. Jennie Kelleher had competed in the Women’s International Bowling Congress Championship tournament in 1988 with over 77,735 competitors in Reno, Nevada. In 1999 a woman named Aleta was nominated for being the Hall of Fame Bowlers, being crowned the only bowler to win the triple crown twice. Aleta had won $1 million dollars bowling professionally making her known as Bowling's first lady But there was one female who was the number one bowling champion in women's history, Her name was Patty Costello. Patty was born in Washington, D.C, Patty did not start bowling till she was 16 years old, quickly making a name for herself after the 1970 Columbia 300 open while earning 25 titles. Patty was the most dominant left handed woman in women’s bowling in 1970 - ‘80s winning over seven events in over a year set by a woman. Patty was part of the Women’s international Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 1989, she then had retired her bowling career after her last game in 1993 winning second place in the WIBC (women's international bowling congress) queen’s. Patty soon passed away at the age of 62 due to pancreatic cancer.
