What happened to Popcorn Friday?

Popcorn Friday was cancelled this year and not everyone was happy about that.

It has always been certainly a day off for everyone, and it has been around for at least 25 years.

Dr. Iarussi explained why Popcorn Friday was cancelled. “We have an agreement with the teachers; we make four calendars, and the teachers vote on one calendar.”

He continued to explain that the teachers voted on the calendars, and then the board approved the one calendar that had the most votes.

This school year, there were three calendars presented to the teachers in January and all of them had Popcorn Friday as a school day, so the teachers had no choice.

Iarussi reasoned that the holiday was gone this year to keep students in school so that students wouldn’t be out in the community that day. They wanted to keep students safe from Covid-19, but that didn’t work because a lot of students didn’t show up to school that day because some were sick but others just didn’t want to show up because it has always been a day off for students and teachers.

It was not the teachers’ fault we didn’t have Popcorn Friday this year although students thought it was the teachers’ fault.

Dr. Iarussi wanted to see how the students and teachers would react to not having Popcorn Friday, and students wanted answers to why it was the way it was.

“Sometimes we have to make decisions that would be in the best interest of our kids and we want to keep you safe and healthy.”

So really Popcorn Friday was cancelled to keep the students safe from Covid-19 and keep them inside instead of letting them at the Popcorn Festival even though they would already be there after school or at the football game.
