Why does school start so early?
Students have many different opinions on how early high schoolers have to be at their school building..There are some reasons why Ohio start time is so early.
One big reason is the transportation of school buses. An early start time can cut transportation costs in half.
Students are actually supposed to be at the designated bus stops five minutes before the bus comes. The bus drivers want to make sure all the kids arrive at school safely and back home. Marion City separates the kids by high school, middle school, and elementary because they have thousands of kids to transport to and from school, and they want to make the bus trip as quick as possible. Someone has to get up early to start school first.
They think high schoolers have a better chance at focusing and getting up early than elementary schools because high schoolers have a better understanding of their body and how much sleep they actually need even though most high schoolers still stay up all night on school nights and are so tired that they sleep through the day.
The school bus and the time students need to be at school may be better for more parents. Most parents have jobs, and the elementary school kids need to know where their kids are.
Other school districts in Marion have similar start times. River Valley’s first period is 7:45, and their day ends at 2:50. Pleasant’s first period starts at 7:30, and their day ends at 2:15. Marion City schools start at 7:40 and end at 2:25.
