Tubby's Pizza: Behind Closed Ovens

Tubby’s Pizza is a family-based pizza shop, located on W Columbia St in Marion, Ohio. The owner himself did not wish to be interviewed, but allowed his son-in-law to be interviewed in his place.

First off, where did the name “Tubby’s PIzza” come from? Well, we got the owner himself, Tubby, to explain that the nickname actually originated from his childhood. As a kid, when Tubby played baseball, he was called said name by multiple baseball coaches, and the name just stuck with him throughout adulthood as well.

Before Tubby’s was what it is now, it was first a gas station, then it became a KFC. It’s said that when they bought the building, they were stuck scraping chicken grease off of the walls. It didn’t officially become “Tubby’s Pizza” until December 7th, 1983, just over 40 years old now.

People tend to question why this pizza shop has so many obstacles. Zero delivery, only cash, etc. Now, you may think this is simply because they don’t have the right tools or money to afford to include these things into their services, but you’d be wrong. Tubby’s is honestly doing a favor for the workers and the customers. If they were to do these things, not only would it cost more for the business, but for the customers as well. They figure that the more cost they cut for themselves, the same goes for the consumers.

The work environment has been described as rather inclusive. Even the highschoolers that just got hired temporarily are treated like family. Workers have described Tubby as one of the best bosses you could work for, always treating everyone with kindness and respect.

It’s honestly super easy to get hired into Tubby’s. As long as you’re 16 or above, there’s a good chance you’ll get the job. It’s said that most people that expect to work at Tubby’s just for a quick few months end up staying all the way through high school and even until they move off to college.
