New Years Resolutions

About 4,000 years ago the ancient Babylions were the first people to make New Year's resolutions and hold records of celebrating the new year. Now centuries later people across the world celebrate the new year and make resolutions.

People were making resolutions 4,000 years ago, so why do we still make them now? Psychologists believe that the New Year in our minds indicates a time where we reevaluate. Due to the time and reevaluation of our lives, we feel motivated and hopeful for possible future achievements. The new year is a time of renewal.

However, despite the hopefulness that fills many at the beginning of the year, that motivation tends to wear off as time goes on. Sometimes the goal was too hard to complete or the time allotted to complete the goal wasn't enough. If one doesn’t see results right away it can be discouraging.

Two polls were sent out, one to staff and the other to students to see what people's New Year's resolutions are. Many replied on both polls saying they do not have one. However, many staff members voted for other answers. Out of 41 staff members, 9 said they would like to make more time for their family and friends; this was the most common resolution among staff. The most common resolution among students was to get better grades, 29 out of 109 students voted for this being their resolution.
