Esports are Coming to Harding!

Athletic director Sean Kearns is working to create an Esports team here at Harding High School. Mr. Kearns’s plan is relatively ambitious, but he has made it clear that this project could be completed in the near future stating that “I would like to see something...going hopefully this year…” and that “...It doesn't have to be slow...”

League of Legends is currently the only game planned for the team. The team is planned to have its own coach who helps teach players how to do their best during the competition. Another plan is for this team to play against other schools, possibly even around the country thanks to the online services that most competitive games have.

The main issue with making this a reality seems to be a lack of leadership for the project. Mr. Kearns mentioned multiple times that he was looking for someone to “spearhead” the project, clarifying that he needed an adult who could monitor the team and give guidance. He is confident that once the team has a supervisor or leader the project will start to take shape.

Mr. Kearns feels that details like the lack of budget, a place to hold team activities, and the necessary equipment to run the event wiIl be easily handled. He sees this project as “a way to reach some kids in a different capacity” and believes that the school will happily help supply the necessary pieces to make this team into a reality.

An important step in making the team is student involvement. Make sure that you reach out to Mr. Kearns about joining the team, and if you have anyone you think has the time to run the project, you should ask if they are willing.. Donating equipment was another idea presented. This team is ultimately for the students, so get involved if you're interested.
