Club Spotlight: Select Strings

Select Strings, led by Orchestra Conductor Stephen Patterson, is a club that gives Harding High School Orchestra students the opportunity to perform music that isn’t normally played by the normal orchestra; From jazz to video game tunes, the students in Select Strings get to decide which pieces they play. It was started because Mr. Patterson kept getting surprise requests to have orchestra kids perform at dinners, meetings, and more, so he decided to make an ensemble that could go to these places. Select Strings has performed at a variety of events including Art Shows, Honors dinners, The Red Cross, and The Women's Club Home. Recently they played for Solo & Ensemble and got a rating of Superior. On March 3rd, they will be performing at the Epworth United Methodist Church at 3:00 for a Brain Cancer Charity event. They will be performing a piece from the movie The Godfather as the event’s theme is movies.

The students of Select Strings are very dedicated and passionate about the club with Mr. Patterson saying “Students put far too much time and effort into it for me to believe otherwise.” They meet every Wednesday and Friday from 2:45-5:00, although the days change from year to year. So if you’re an Orchestra member looking for more opportunities to play music, consider joining Select Strings!
