Valentine’s Day… Do We Love or Hate It?

When polled, both teachers and students were given these two questions, “Do you consider Valentine’s Day a holiday?” as well as “Do you like Valentine’s Day?” There were 214 responses overall and the results were kind of… surprising. 80% of HHS students and staff agreed that Valentine’s was indeed a holiday while around 20% disagreed that it was not. On the second question, around 46% said they love Valentine’s while 5% claimed they hate it. About 48% of Harding’s students and staff said they don’t necessarily care for Valentine's Day.

Valentine’s Day originated in the 8th century. The book of Christian liturgy, containing the priest's part in celebrating the Eucharist (communion) recorded the celebration of the Feast of Saint Valentine on February 14th. The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries when notions of courtly love flourished. The true definition of a Valentine is “a card sent, often anonymously, on St. Valentine's Day to a person one loves or is attracted to” and/or “a person to whom one sends a card on Valentine's Day.” But the real question is, is Valentine’s Day an actual holiday? Also, do we like, love, or hate it?

It seems that Harding actually does believe that St. Valentine's Day is a holiday. For those who did not get a vote, what do you think? Hope you all had an amazing Valentine’s full of love:)
