To Switch or Not to Switch

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

The students of 4th period lunch on the day of the freshman class rings presentation were

stunned to see the cafeteria in a new, different light, literally! Instead of having overhead lighting on, more calming lighting was active. When the normal lights were turned back on, the students' reaction was surprisingly negative.

When asking a few students if they liked the mood lighting more, an overwhelming amount said yes. A few of the reasons students had mentioned were also Insightful. Sofya Hart-Sedykh says “the overhead lights are super white and blinding whereas the little lights they had on. It was a lot better and a lot more calming, and I feel like it would make for a better lunch experience. If we had that every day, I'd actually enjoy lunch.” With so many students liking the mood lighting, why would we not switch permanently?

Mr. Smith, a monitor for 4th period lunch, stated some pros on the matter of switching: “the more intense the lights are the more your eyes strain because were not built to have bright lights in our face, so you start to squint you start to get the stress of the high intensity lights, causing headaches and a lot of different things. Reduced amount of light makes things more calm.” Mr. Smith also stated some Cons: “we’d need more circulation in the cafeteria we’d need to make sure we walking around a little more frequently.”

When asking if they would enjoy the switch, most students agreed that it would lessen head stress and give a more calming effect. Mr. Smith also had this idea, saying: “I think most students would welcome it and it would make for a little bit calmer lunch environment.”
