The Aftermath of the fires in Hawaii

More than 2,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged in the fires and will cost $5.52 billion to rebuild the buildings. In Lahaina, the homes are charred in devastation, the air smells like smoldering debris and chemicals. Throughout the town you can see the hulk of blackened cars. The gas stations and propane tanks have exploded, as the town burned down the boats in the harbor have caught fire.

The raging inferno sent toxic fumes and materials spewing through the town into the sea. The Red Cross is working with their partners to provide meals, disaster health and mental health services, and spiritual care to help families and individuals begin their recovery process. Lahaina was one out of four fires that broke out on Maui burning 2,170 acres, The Olinda burning 1,081 acres, Pulehu burning 3,268 acres and the Kula fire only burned 202 acres. On September 22, after the Environment Protection Agency has cleared properties of hazardous material the residents and property owners in the first zones will be contacted to require a pass for reentry. It will take over a year to clean up Maui for the debris and it will take billions of dollars just to restore Lahaina.
