Canada Shocked by Violence

On September 4th 2022, tragedy struck James Smith Cree Nation and the

nearby village of Weldon. James Smith and Weldon are both parts of the

indegenous community in Saskatchewan, Canada.

13 separate reports in these areas came to officers as 2 men, brothers Damien and Myles Sanderson, stabbed roughly 28 people, killing 10 of the victims. Most of the victims and the 2 brothers were from the James Smith Cree community. Several of the victims were targeted, including the brothers’ in-laws that were killed.

The Monday after the attack, Damien Sanderson was found dead by the police. It is believed that his brother, Myles, killed him. Officers had actually been searching for Myles since May when he stopped seeing his caseworker; he had been convicted of 59 crimes since the age of 18, including theft and robbery.

He was caught by officers after a high-speed chase after he stole a car from a homeowner (who was not harmed in the theft). Myles stole the car, the owner’s phone, water, soda, and cigarettes. However, not long after being apprehended, Myles Sanderson died in custody from ‘medical distress.’ It was revealed, however, that Myles did have self-inflicted wounds when arrested.
